Shape Up Sugar Land (SUSL) is excited to welcome you to our updated website that now includes a blog. Now you can have a voice for wellness in the Sugar Land/Fort Bend County, TX community.
Shape Up Sugar Land is a nonprofit organization that is comprised 100% of community volunteers that are dedicated to the following Mission Statement: Promoting wellness, raising awareness and encouraging activities that enable healthier lifestyles for the community.
Our board members and volunteers enable SUSL to be "thought leaders" on all six dimensions of wellness from the National Wellness Institute:
- Emotional
- Intellectual
- Occupational
- Physical
- Social
- Spiritual
The City of Sugar Land is one of the best places in America to raise a family and recently the Anti-Defamation League named Sugar Land a Community of Respect© for the second straight year. In the next few days SUSL will be collaborating with the City of Sugar Land on the implementation of a Mayor’s Fitness Council for Sugar Land. We are looking for community feedback of “wellness/fitness needs” and we welcome you to blog suggestions and thoughts on this topic. We can positvely impact the wellness direction for our community.
We welcome your comments here on our blog/website. You may also contact our organization by sending us an email at info@shapeupsugarland.org.
Thanks for joining the Sugar Land/Fort Bend wellness conversation, and please spread the word.
The BP MS 150 is a two-day fundraising bike ride from Houston to Austin organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society. It's the largest non-profit event of its kind in North America with more than 13,000 registered cyclists, 3,000 volunteers, and countless supporters and spectators. In 2009, the ride raised $17 million for MS research and services for persons living with MS.
Multiple sclerosis is a progressive neurological disorder that affects people in many different ways. It could be paralysis one day, loss of vision the next or impaired memory the day after that. Living with MS means living with uncertainty.
When it comes to MS, only two things are certain:
* Another American is diagnosed every hour of every day.
* Many people are joining the movement toward a world free of MS including the cyclists in the MS150
There is still time to register for the event and complete your training:

If you are not going to ride this year please make a donation to fight MS. Shape Up Sugar Land board member Thomas Brooks is in training for the event for the second year in a row. He is over 75% of the way toward his $1650 fundraising goal, but he could use your help to fight MS. Please donate: http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/ThomasWBrooks
Thank you!
Sugar Land Council member, Jacqueline Baly Chaumette recently presented and discussed the Bicycle Friendly Community program with fellow council members. The Bicycle Friendly Communities Campaign is an awards program that recognizes municipalities that actively support bicycling. A Bicycle Friendly Community provides safe accommodation for cycling and encourages its residents to bike for transportation and recreation. From more details visit:
http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bicyclefriendlyamerica/communities/
Encouraging bicycling is a simple way towards improving public health. With more people bicycling, communities experience reduced traffic demands, improved air quality and greater physical fitness. In addition, bicycle-friendly towns are often seen as places with a high quality of life. This can translate into increased property values, business growth and increased tourism. In other words, this can be a great fit for Sugar Land.
Members of the following cycling and wellness organizations were present at the City Council meeting to show their support:
Texas Instruments Cycling Team
Sugar Cycles
Houston Cycling
Bike Houston
Greater Houston Off Road Bike Association
Fort Bend TriPsyclones Triathlon Club
Schlumberger Cycling Club
Bayou City Riders
Shape Up Sugar Land
Fort Bend Fit
The City of Sugar Land’s Vision 2025 documents guiding principles City Council should consider when crafting policy and making decisions that will affect the City’s future. In particular, this document does support a Bicycle Friendly Community campaign by outlining a pursuit in both inter- and intra-city transportation options.
